The Scale Went Up 500 Grams—Did I Gain Fat?

By Coach Samiksha ·
A bathroom scale beside water, rice, salt and a multi-day trend line

Yesterday: 72.4 kg. Today: 72.9 kg. Suddenly the rice feels like a mistake and the whole plan looks broken.

Your scale measures more than fat

Body weight changes with water retention, sodium, carbohydrates, food in your digestive system, bowel movements and hormonal shifts. A 500-gram increase does not automatically mean 500 grams of new body fat.

Treating every morning as a pass-or-fail test can create unnecessary restriction and punishment workouts.

Read the trend, not the emotion

  • Weigh under similar conditions if you choose to track.
  • Look at several weeks rather than one morning.
  • Keep meals and movement normal after a temporary increase.
  • Use other signs of progress, including strength and consistency.
